Stories of Listening:
Sebastian (age 3)

Language of Lining Up
Sebastian seems to be concerned with materials being lined up just right. I ‘hear’ this desire as I observe in day to day contexts and in Sebastian’s interactions with me and with other children. I start to form a belief that Sebastian is comforted by the routine and predictability his lines and arrangements bring.
As Sebastian is also a dual-language learner he does not speak with as many words as most children to tell us what it is he wants to happen. His passions can be misunderstood, misheard and undervalued. When I listen differently to Sebastian working with lines I hear nuances and details that communicate his ideas, preferences and identity powerfully.
